Violent Crime Dangerously High in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Stabbing incidents in Winnipeg extremely high.

Stabbing incidents in Winnipeg are on the rise.

In Winnipeg violent crime is reaching an all time high. With good reason, many people are citing gang violence as the culprit for the recent spike in shockingly brutal activity. Citizens are turning with raised eyebrows to a provincial government that has been fighting a ‘war on gang violence’ for ten years with little success. In fact the number of serious trauma cases in the city is growing by as much as 10% a year. One 13 year-old boy who, along with his nine year-old sister witnessed a violent altercation between gang members in his neighbourhood said, “…I just wear black or something. If I wear red around here I’ll get shot or something.” Some officials are attributing the recent increase to the availability of weapons on the street, as gun crime is on the rise.

However, it would appear that gang violence is not the cause for the bulk of the full morgue slabs and hospital beds. Only 26% of homicides in Manitoba are gang related. Admittedly 26% is a pretty good slice but what of the other 74%? While browsing Canadian news services for reports of recent violence in Manitoba one notices the great number of regular people who have taken to solving their problems by stabbing each other. It almost seems that every Manitoban is carrying a knife or broken bottle in their back pocket. The numbers are alarming.

In one weekend in Winnipeg this year five people were stabbed following altercations at parties or out on the street and 3 people were assaulted and hospitalized including 12 and 15 year-old boys. These crimes were not gang related and there seems to be no limit to their brutality.

A 19 year-old girl abducted a baby and beat her against a wall, a man was doused with paint thinner and set aflame while investigating a sound outside his home, a woman was beaten to death with a bat after shoplifting a can of ham, a man was struck by a vehicle and then stabbed repeatedly, a group wielding hammers attacked 2 people in one night and police officers were beaten while trying to stop some people wandering through traffic. Most recently a man was attacked with a machete yesterday evening. The list goes on and on and only increases in brutality.

Although I can understand why people would blame guns and gangs for all the violence in Winnipeg they seem more or less to be keeping to their old habits. Regular people are letting their hot tempers take control fixing everything with assault and murder. The trend is not to reach for a gun but to use much cheaper and easier to find blades and shanks of any kind. Winnipeg officials should stop blaming everything on violent gangs (though probably should get on that too) and take a closer look at the people they are trying to protect. What is driving so many Manitobans to violence?
