An Olympic Test for a “Just Society”

The arrival of the Olympic torch today at Victoria International and its touchdown mark the beginning of the most exclusive and non-public games ever held in Canada, with the largest security force ever assembled and the greatest trampling of human rights and the laws of this country ever executed in this free and just society.
16,000 security personnel have been amassed in legion with orders and directives kept hidden from the people of this “JUST SOCIETY”. CSIS, our own CIA is intercepting emails and cell phone chatter for “hot word” conversations. Known protesters have been intimidated and touched by I.S.U. to ensure they know they are being watched. Municipal By laws have been amended to afford police draconian abilities to squash protest, without having the right to first be tested by the Supreme Court to ensure they pass constitutional muster and will not even be heard until after these games are completed. Six Billion dollars of taxpayer money has been spent to date renovating primping and preening the provincial image, to sell a province already groaning under the current rate of growth. The poor are now able to be “legally” swept from the public view of the world to non-existent shelters for their protection. The lies have been told… most of which promised not to do all of the things I have listed previously in this article, now on with the professional sports games. (These are now paid athelets; amateur requirements were long ago stripped from the games)
The Vanoc C.E.O John Furlong has booked gratuitously expensive parties with his private club friends; remember he was the General Manager of the Arbutus club for years. The “Honourable” Premiere of this province has remained silent while monopoly crown corporations have spent billions of taxpayer dollars “buying” tickets to games which the accountants will post as revenue not the interdepartmental transfer at best or the tax it truly is, an act that would have any other accountant in this province arrested for fraud. The Prime Minister, whose only reason for existence is to ensure the constitution and its application, was also in attendance for the photo opp. Glad handing, with The Charter of Rights and Freedoms dragging behind him in Tatters. The stage is set, the flame now “glowing in our hearts”.
The people of the province of British Columbia, footing Vancouver’s party, in Trail, Kitimat, Port Hardy, Mission, Prince George, Nanaimo and every other small town, who have had our public services and health care cut, our schools and special needs assistants removed to finance it, may now press our noses to “the great glass window” or remove ourselves to our TV screens to watch the “most beautiful place on earth” host the Games.
“These games are about hope”, “These games are about being all that you can be”, “These games are about inspiration”, crowed our Premiere to a gathering of his paid cronies, political back clappers and friends at the touchdown ceremony. While the province sells knee and hip replacements to Saskatchewan due to a lack of operating rooms here, 16 week waiting periods are the norm for standard surgery and new tax is instituted to pay off business with promise that the savings will be passed back which every consumer rich or poor knows is a lie.
But Let the games begin…let the world see the flame and its beacon of hope for what B.C. will become, cold hard and profit driven. Humanity sacrificed at the sacred alter of Mammon (money). To those around the world viewing B.C. from our beautiful shores of Vancouver, (and they are beautiful, my family have lived here for two hundred years) from the sparkling views of the sea to sky, from the grand vista of your aircraft as you marvel at the geography, drink in the vista but don’t look too deep or too far a field or talk to too many people not at the celebrations in hotel private clubs or rented restaurants, don’t drive to see the pine beetle devastation, visible from space, that is rotting the heart out of small town B.C and the multitudinous report and study money spent while the government actually did nothing!…..you might not like what you see!
