Martin vs. Chretien….The Final Curtain?

So Denis Coderre is the latest casualty in the internecine wars between the Chretien and Martin camps. Apparently the Martinites have come out ahead again despite the party faithful’s best efforts to circumvent both camps by electing Stephane Dion at the last real leadership convention. Alas, Stephane just couldn’t get it together and is rumoured to be contemplating a quiet withdrawal from the ongoing Liberal knife fight – now that his campaign debts are likely paid off.

What oh what are generations of loyal grass roots Liberals to do?

Iggy is floundering like a professor out of college. The Quebec wing is in theatric disarray and there isn’t a safe Liberal seat west of Barrie.

Meanwhile Jack Layton is supporting the government in face of his fading poll numbers, Elizabeth May is dooming herself to another Green shellacking on the Wet Coast, Gilles Duceppe is eating crow and Prime Minister Stephen Harper is secretly hoping that someone forces an election – right frickin’ now.

The Liberals are in deep doo-doo and they have no one to blame but themselves and their opposing Martin/Chretien camps – both of whom still seem to believe that “their guy” would be a shoo in for all those disaffected voters who “really hate Stephen Harper because he’s a bully.” Give me a juvenile rationale break!

At just about 1/2 the number of seats in the house as the Conservatives, it’s clear to me that way too many Liberals are smoking the same stuff that just sent Mark Emery to the US. They simply don’t seem to be paying attention to how they are getting beaten. Or to the mood of Canadians for yet another election. It’s all about saving their political bacon – which is beginning to look more than a little crispy every day.

No surprise to me – though I may have to upgrade my prediction of another minority Conservative government to a majority this coming post-Olympic spring. Either way, Iggy is not the guy who is going to unseat Stephen Harper. Not even budge him.

So it’s time for Liberals to look at their big swinging gonads in the mirror, genuflect and turn the power in the party over to the women. They’ll stop the infighting, come out with some enlightened Liberal approaches to Canadian governance and field a candidate who could actually have a shot at resurrecting the party in the hockey mom hinterlands – where Harper is killing them with kindness … and family tax deductions.

Otherwise it’s game over. Especially if Josée Verner is the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

One Response to “Martin vs. Chretien….The Final Curtain?”

  1. Cindy Says:

If you call any of this “getting out ahead” progress. The Martin people must go away and die. So too must the old farty Chretien types like my father. The party must renew and learn how to earn political victory with some kind of integrity. Party might start by treating the women who do all work with some flippin respect. and by getting rid of obvious superficial uptights like Ralph Goodale out of the front bench. The guy single handedly destroyed the Liberal parties in Saskatchewan cares none for his responsibility mocking everyone in his supposed path. Losers all of them without volunteers, hard workers, fundraisers and believers.
