The Dziekanski Inquiry: Canada’s International Claim To Shame

A confused and frustrated immigrant flew into Vancouver from Poland and spent 10 hours waiting to see his mother. During the course of his frustration, he was approached by RCMP Officers, tasered, handcuffed, jumped on and eventually died.

This incident was fortunately caught on someone’s cell phone. The cell phone footage caught the RCMP in a myriad of lies.

The media has since played the footage quite frequently when analyzing every different angle that this story has to offer. It is footage that is hard to watch as it records the last minutes of a man’s life before he was assaulted by the officers. It is hard not to be affected by the man’s cries of pain after being tasered a number of times.

When all was said and done, the coroner ruled the death as inconclusive and the RCMP were absolved of any criminal wrongdoing. If that was not bad enough, the inquiry into Dziekanski’s death is still ongoing and the officers are now testifying. What is the bloody point if the officers are getting off scot free? Furthermore, the testimony of the first officer has been scrutinized and been found to be very misleading and there is no doubt that there is more to come.

Hopefully Dziekanski’s mother will be able to file a civil suit against the officers for wrongful death. These officers should have had to stand a proper trial and I believe they should have been convicted of manslaughter at the very least. Secondly, the RCMP should be publicly admonished by the Canadian government for its lack of knowledge or care of its use of tasers. They did not properly test the equipment preferring instead to take the manufacturer’s word that it was reliable. The Dziekanski incident was a tragedy because it could have been avoided and that there was no justice done to the victim or his family.

These are very sad times for the Canadian mounted police and the Canadian justice system. In conspiring together to prevent the officers from facing any criminal charges, a diservice was done to the victim and our legal system. Shame! Shame!

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of a story like this. It’s going to be interesting to see how this one unfolds. I hope the court system will get to the bottom of this and bring justice to those involved.
