One issue that I have come across on many occasions, is once I have tried to explain this to people, they will pause for a moment (perhaps taking a moment to deal with the cognitive dissonance that are experiencing) and then continue on in denial that the political spectrum comparison I had provide never happened.

I can't help but think that many people don't really take the time to critically think about why they say certain things, but rather take "talking points" from whatever news sources they have (whether TV, family etc) and parrot those points as their own. Throwing in a curve-ball like this, which is something many new outlets like to ignore, really puts them off guard.

Mike you make a really good point. People sometimes forget that there is not a parallel between the right/left in Canada and the right/left in the United States. Our entire political spectrum sits way to the left of the right-wing of the US system.
As you mention, the former Reform and Alliance parties in Canada are possibly the closest things we have had to a "conservative" party with ideologies like that in the United States.

That being said, lets not forget that a majority conservative government, at least one under Harper, would probably have followed Bush into Iraq and would possibly consider the exploration of reinstating capital punishment and abolishing pro-choice rights.

Harper's appearance as more of a centrist these days is exactly because of the reasons you have stated (a play for a majority government) and I do not believe it represents any concrete ideological change of paradigm.
