Obama Comes To Canada

Unless you have been buried beneath 40 feet of Newfoundland snow, you have probably been barraged by all the “Obama’s Coming To Canada” onslaught by the Canadian media.

First off, the man is coming to our capital for a grand total of five hours (working lunch included). The CBC has come closest to a round-the-clock CNN coverage that I have ever seen. The CTV network not to be outdone came short of trying to speculate which toilet Obama would be using or if he could hold it for the full five hours that he is there.
I watched CBC anchor Peter Mansbridge’s interview Obama yesterday and today it was run once again and over-analyzed by Peter and a panel of experts.

Obama is without doubt, the most charismatic president since John F. Kennedy. He has managed to capture the world’s imagination with his stirring eloquence. Though we as Canadians are fortunate that he has chosen to visit us first, we should keep our composure in check as there is no fanfare, but a quick brisk working visit. Still, it is fun to watch the normally anti-American biased CBC go all out with being ga-ga’d over Obama.
It is also interesting to have to watch Canadians who have always had a distant attitude towards Americans suddenly coming down with a bad case of Obamamania.

Canadians have been blatantly reminded that their own political leaders fall well below the bi-partisan-willing president. Apparently the Prime Minister’s office has cut Obama’s meeting time with Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff from thirty minutes down to fifteen minutes. That was childish. Ignatieff responded that he is seeking out his American contacts to change this scheduling manoeuvre. This is another equally childish response. Given the coalition fiasco of last December and the inescapable and possibly unpredictable Bloc presence, maybe it is a good thing that Obama is not spending more time in our Parliament. Some Canadians like me are secretly praying that Obama’s meeting with our politician does not affect his judgement towards Canadians as a people. After all, how often did we ridicule the Americans for electing George W. Bush TWICE! As most Canadians watch the news coverage of Obama’s visit, I suspect deep down they are more concerned about how to recover an economy that is being killed by the greed and massive bailouts but the Obama visit makes for a nice mini-distraction.
