Israel Threatens a Disproportionate Attack on Hamas

Since Israel’s January 18th ceasefire, there have been numerous Hamas attacks on Israelis, with multiple rockets fired into Israel. Israel has been tolerant so far but it is coming to the point that they must once again take action against Hamas to protect Israeli citizens. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said, “The cabinet’s position from the outset was that if there is rocket fire at southerners, there will be a response that will essentially be disproportionate.”

Disproportionate was a word that was used to describe Israel’s recent offensive in headlines across the world. It has been my position that Israel’s recent offensive has been very peaceful compared to most offensives in world history. In such a densely populated area, I was actually impressed by the low casualty toll. But many people would disagree with me… I can not even begin to fathom the response of these people when Israel takes disproportionate action.

Despite all the outrage, I still see the situation in a very clear manner. It all comes down to whether their actions are justified. Israel has been attacked by a terrorist organization over and over again for years. Nobody in their right mind, even extreme Hamas supporters, can reasonably say that ignoring the attacks is an option. Israel must protect their citizens, just like any other country in the world would do the same.

Now that we have determined that Israel must take some sort of action, the optimal solution to the problem is eliminating the source. It is clear that warnings and threats will not deter Hamas, and they will keep attacking Israel. If Israel does not take any action, citizens will continue to live in fear of their lives, and will continue to be killed by Hamas rockets. With better technology, Hamas rockets will have longer and longer ranges and will begin to make their way into larger, more populous cities. A disproportionate attack on Hamas is the only solution to put an end to this conflict, permanently.
