York University Students Back to School as CUPE 3903 Strike Ends
The York University Labour Disputes Resolution Act, 2009 has been passed by the Ontario legislature and received Royal Assent. As a result, the Executive Committee of Senate declares that the disruption of academic activities that began on November 6, 2008 has ended. Courses and other academic activities that were suspended at the outset of a strike by CUPE 3903 will resume on Monday, February 2.
Its about time.
It disgusts me that it took our government this long to force the strikers back to work. They have adversely affected 50,000 students’ educations, and those who supported the strike should feel ashamed of themselves. Union or not, there is no justification for disrupting the students’ educations, forcing many to lose their summer jobs, and holding the students in limbo, unable to find work for fear of school resuming. Strike supporters treated the students as a means to their end, not as people.
The education of students should never be compromised, and to learn that their education has suffered because of TAs whining like babies about money is disgraceful. They are already some of the highest paid TAs in the country. If they don’t like their job, or the hours, then don’t take the job. That’s the bottom line. And job security for contract faculty? Seriously? York doesn’t go around firing professors whenever they want to. They need the professors to teach the courses, they can’t just pick hundreds of professors off the street to replace them.
Why do so many people hate unions? CUPE 3903 showed us why. Good job strikers.

As far as I understand, the University was not obligated to cancel classes or allow the union to form picket lines on public property and as such, York must be attributed responsibility in this matter along with CUPE

York is obligated to adhere to strict standards of academic excellece and maintain a high level of consistency. Allowing some classes to continue would make the educations of some students inconsistent with others, as well as violate academic fairness and equality to all students.
Thus, York’s only option to keep classes going would be to hire 3400 replacement profs and TAs on short notice.
