Stephen Harper Thinks Wishfully?

Prime Minister Stephen Harper had a far less dreary outlook on the state of the Canadian economy in a recent interview with Maclean’s magazine.

Harper believes that Canada is in a strong economic position compared with others and should be able to exit the recession relatively quickly.

Has Harper changed his tune for the benefit of the Canadian people? It’s obvious that this is a move of a political nature. Remember everyone, Parliament isn’t in session currently, and when it does come back, we may be heading back to the voting booths should the idea of a coalition government still be present. Yet, political observers believe that Harper will remain in power. As well, the Liberals have backed off from their attacks, and Harper himself has stated that he doesn’t want to go back to the polls.

Regardless of intent, these recent comments are more upbeat when compared to his comments in mid-December when Harper said he was “very worried about the economy,” and made speculations about a possible depression.

However, it’s worth noting that Harper still believes that there is no chance Canada can escape this global economic crisis, and Ottawa will be running budget deficits for the next few years.

The Toronto Star also reports that the Conservative government will unveil a budget on January 27, and Harper said that it will include a stimulus plan worth as much as $30 billion.

“The underlying reality is that Canada enters this recession in a pretty strong position compared to most western industrialized countries,” Harper told Maclean’s.

The question now, is what’s it going to be Mr. Harper? Will it be a continued positive outlook? Or should we expect some more doom and gloom as the recession continues?

Nevertheless, a strong economy won’t bring back jobs for all those forced out of work by factories shuttered all across the country, and specifically in Ontario. How long can Canadian citizens wait for improvement? Before long we may begin to see home foreclosures and folks losing there pensions because the companies they work for don’t have the money and our banks may fall into trouble.

Buckle up folks; it could be a long ride.

  1. Jared Says:

Harper has been back and forth on this issue so many times that if you try and follow his view on the economy you are bound to end up with whiplash. We need a leader who is prepared to take a stance on an issue and defend it, instead of changing their mind to make themselves look good.
