The Middle East Conflict – My Two Cents Worth

Canada, along with the most powerful nations in the world, recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization. Throughout most of the history of the Gaza Strip, these terrorists have not recognized Israel’s right to exist. As a result, they suicide bomb, fire rockets, and do everything they can to maim Israel. In return, Israel responds by taking out as many of the terrorists as possible. The difference between the two sides is that one attacks innocent civilians and one attacks recognized terrorists. These are the facts. People may argue that there are innocent civilian casualties killed by the Israelis, but isn’t that a part of war? No military in the world would be capable of completely avoiding civilians in such a densely populated area such as Gaza.

To remove any bias from the situation, let us pretend that instead of Israel we are talking about the US. Everyday, terrorists fire rockets and go into major cities like New York and L.A. and blow themselves up. How would the US respond? Undoubtedly, the US would seek out every single member of this terrorist organization and destroy it. Nobody would be outraged because this would be the expected course of action.

So why is it different in Israel? In the US, one terrorist attack would be all that is allowed before their army sweeps in and annihilates any other terrorists. But in Israel, they are under constant fire and continually show restraint, yet still, the world cries out at every move they make to defend themselves.

Is it because the US is so powerful that people hold their tongues, or is it just anti-Semitism? When will the world remove the bias from their eyes and see the situation for what it really is – a recognized terrorist organization attacking a sovereign state. Canada has stated that they support Israel’s self-defense and efforts to protect themselves. If Canada really supports Israel, then it is time for our government to start rallying support from other important nations and bring this conflict to an end. Without the imminent threat of action from other powerful nations, nothing will stop Hamas and the rockets and bombings will continue.

I truly agree with everything you say. How is it Israel’s fault if they are being bombed every day. Today the news showed proof that Hamas is storing weapons in “Mosques”, but some reporters insist that Israel is targeting civilian infrastructure. I really think that the US and Canada need to step up or shut up. I had enough of the reports saying we need a ceasefire. It won’t happen, now we need to figure out the next best option, getting rid of terrorism!

If we are giving analogies… then here is one for thought.

Most of what you said is non-sense and I will gladly tell you why.

Israel doesn’t have a right to exist. Neither does Palestine, Canada, or any state for that matter because there is no such thing as an existence right. If you just think about it for a moment you will not only realize that you can’t find this non-existent right, but it doesn’t even make sense. States are democratic institutions and are mailable. There is nothing that says a state must exist. As Canadians we can legally dismantle Canada if we so choose. There is nothing that says Canada must exist. Does Quebec have a right to exist as a sovereign state, or does Canada have a right to exist within Quebec as a sovereign state? There just is no such thing as a right to exist over democratic institutions. The idea is one counter to democracy.

Oddly only one state in the world claims this “right to exist”, and that is Israel. Not surprising is that only one people in the world are expected to recognize this as well, and that is the Palestinians. This bizarre set-up of propaganda is so effective that, not only does it overcome the barriers of not-existing, as I mentioned, but also even if true would be false. Israel doesn’t have any right at all to annex the Palestinian state. Israel’s state borders are completely illegally under numerous international law and rulings. Israel doesn’t have a right to exist where it currently is. That’s the law.

The entire thing is a fascinating achievement in propaganda.

  7. Mike Sheps Says:

The only non-sense on this page is you looking up Noam Chomsky’s viewpoint on “right to exist” and retyping it in your comment.

Many countries in the past have claimed or denied other countries a right to exist.

Egypt recognized Israel’s right to exist.
The Palestinians feel their state has a right to exist.
Turkey, and other countries, too, have all made comments about rights to exist.

You are taking a theoretical concept and trying to apply it to this situation but really need to look at the practicle aspect, which you conveniently keep avoiding.

  8. EEEK Says:

Israel is the aggressor under law, it commits an illegal occupation, and illegal deprivation of vital resources and commits violent acts of aggression. Israel broke the truce persistently, but notably provoking rocket fire retaliation when Israel killed Gazans on November 4th. Even between that time and the start of the massacre, during which rockets had killed no one, Israel was killing more Gazans including children on December 2nd I believe.

Israel has no right to commit aggression. There is a clear alternative, and it is even persistently recognized by Israel’s supposed antagonist, Hamas. Israel must end it’s illegal crimes and part of that is the siege and illegal collective punishment of Gazans, and brutally despicable occupation of Palestine. The reasons you site for Hamas’s violence, a lack to recognize Israel’s “right to exist” is ridiculous. It’s Israel’s decades long crimes and recent crimes.

What you call the “facts”, one side attacking civilians and the other attacking terrorists, is blatantly not fact. Israel overwhelmingly kills more civilians. There is nothing which indicates different other than Israel’s word, and if we accept the intent and word of those who kill, than you can’t just extend that rational to Israel and must extend it to other killers intents too. A tricky line to follow, especially if you apply it to Hamas’s intention. Facts, are Israel kills more by extremely disparaging numbers, even outside the recent massacre.

Your “bias” free analogy missed one component to be bias-less, and that is an entire other side. Hamas are religious extremists, and former terrorists turned quasi-government, but they are certainly not firing rockets for the reasons you’d like to think or your imagined analogy leaves out.

  9. EEEK Says:

Mike Sheps, it is exactly what Chomsky says (from memory) and I am not copying it anymore than anyone else repeating the non-sense itself is copying it from another. It happens to be the truth and you didn’t take up any part of it other than some remote claims, but those are meaningless. I suspect they are only brought on, as I have seen, from the use by Israel.

I am absolutely not talking about a theoretical concept. It’s the other way around. If you are claiming a “right” then you are obligated to display it in some fashion to claim. You have done nothing of the sort. You didn’t even state yourself whether the practice is actual because I suspect you know it is not.

I explained the “practical” aspect and gave clear examples.
