$300+ Million Down the Drain – 2 Months Later

Imagine what Canada could have done with the election budget… saved thousands of jobs, stimulated the economy, given everyone in Canada $10…

There are many things that could have been done but instead Harper wasted $300+ million and accomplished nothing. Now the government is prorogued and there will likely be an election again within the next year or two regardless of what happens when the prorogation period is over.

What will happen in the next election?

It looks like there will be even more strategic voting next election. People will vote for a candidate they do not actually support in the hopes that their vote will accomplish some other purpose. People have to consider things such as Harper’s lies, possible coalitions, and even the Green Party’s inability to win a seat (so why “waste” a vote for them). With so many issues that can influence our political environment, strategic voting is becoming more and more prominent.

This is not how an election should take place. We should vote for who we feel best represents our viewpoints. If nearly 7% of Canadians support the Green Party, why do they not have a seat? Over HALF of all voters placed a checkmark beside a name that was not elected into parliament. Combine this with the fact that over 40% of voters didn’t even care to show up and we can see clearly that the election results did not effectively capture the votes of Canadian citizens. What we need is a system that will allow every single person’s vote to count. We need to switch our electoral system. It is time for proportional representation. If we ever want to exercise our right to vote and not feel it is a big waste, this is the only way that every vote can count.

This will generate more apathy towards existing political structure (read involvement). With a population aging faster than ever, all the more reasons for a younger generation to take more interest. Yet, wastage like this wil make sure politics stays bland, old and plain stupid.

Although having been on the sidelines – as I’m not a citizen (yet) to be able to vote (am a new Canadian), I do think a major rethinking is required across the Canadian political spectrum.

Ah, but we can only talk! :)
