For those who didn’t know, on Sunday, November 23, 2008, every single person in the US got a free Dr. Pepper. The soft drink company promised a free can to every citizen if Gun ‘N’ Roses released their album in 2008.

What does this have to do with politics?

How come Canadians don’t get free Dr. Pepper? The US is just a bigger and more important market. Canada continues to live in the shadow of America. I always feel that Canada is just a big place on the top left of the map to most people in both America and the rest of the world.

What can we do about this to make Canada mean something other than cold weather to people from other countries? I think our main problem is that Canadians do not unite under anything, except, perhaps hockey and beer. The reason for this is that Canada has thousands of diverse cultures and many immigrants who were not born here. I think multiculturalism is a great thing and is greater to experience than the “melting pot” of cultures seen in the US.

However, because many people were not born in Canada, there lacks an overall sense of patriotism in our country. This, I think is the cause of Canada’s lackluster position in the world. Without patriotism or some sort of national cause to unite all the people living here, Canada fails to make a stand for anything on a global level. Look at other countries. Israel is united in a struggle for their homeland, Japan unites around their technological achievements, etc. They are in the headlines all the time, yet, in the rest of the world, Canada is rarely mentioned.

If we want our country to be recognized around the world, Canadians must unite… but the problem seems to be that Canada really has nothing to unite over.
